On September 2nd 2016, Narcos will return for its second season, but with Pablo Escobar scheduled to die, will it spell the end for Narcos as a show? We’re taking a look at the evidence and you may find that season 3 of Narcos is actually looking very positive for the future but will be vastly different from the first two seasons.

Just to catch those out of the loop up. Narcos is a drama series based on the true events of the 1980’s drug war in Colombia. Up until now the series has focused on the drug kingpin known as Pablo Escobar, a ruthless businessman who in his hay day was making millions of dollars every single month from shipping cocaine into the US. The series follows the real life events that leads to his capture and ultimate death. The depiction of Pablo Escobar has been considered to be widely true to life and is one of the best Netflix Originals currently available but the series covers quite a lot in season 1 leaving not much room for Pablo to hide in season 2.

As the official marketing campaign suggests (see above), Pablo in season 2 is going to meet his demise. At the end of season 1 we see him escaping the prison that was built especially for him. In realistic timeline terms this really only gives him a matter of months before his death. We all know it’s inevitable and with confirmation, it’s hardly even arguable at this point. If the show was to be only about Pablo Escobar it would certainly seem like season 2 was the end.

With Narcos, it’s clear that Netflix has some big intentions for the show going forward but will likely radically change the shows format from how you currently know it. With Pablo gone, that pretty much wraps up the story in his bubble as such. Of course the drug war wages on throughout the next few decades and that’s what we’re likely to cover in any future season but with a different protagonist at the helm.

What word has there been from Netflix on the subject of a third season? Well not a lot but if you look at the official description of the show, that it has on purposely been changed to be generic and non-specific.

This raw, gritty series chronicles the gripping real-life stories of the drug kingpins of the late 1980s and the corroborative efforts of law enforcement to meet them head on in brutal, bloody conflict. It details the many, often-conflicting forces – legal, political, police, military and civilian – that clash in the effort to control cocaine, one of the world’s most valuable commodities.

Reading that, you wouldn’t actually know that the show was about Pablo Escobar in the first place and definitely gives a lot of scope for Narcos to actually turn into an anthology series with each season or two seasons, following a different high profile drug lord. At this point, we’d say it’s almost a given that we’ll be expecting a third season of the show but will probably be unrecognizable as to how it’s been up until now.

Tl:Dr – Yes, Narcos will be the final season for Pablo Escobar but the series will likely continue with a different cast and subject matter for the future turning the show into an anthology series.
